Recollections

Character is built on our experiences. What happens to us day by day constitutes what structures we ultimately turn out to be. We choose what we do with these daily building blocks that determine our final edifices. Our recollections remain in our minds, be they positive or negative. It is how we react to these circumstances that make all the difference and construct us to become who we are.

Do we look at these incidents as pebbles in our paths or boulders blocking our trails? Do bad memories build us up, or do we allow them to tear us down?

Do we fight a war for hate, or do we fight a war for peace? Do we allow prejudice and ignorant bias to fill us with bitterness, or do we in turn soften our hearts to others as the Golden Rule has taught us?

Do we bemoan the hurricane that took down all our beautiful trees leaving our yards bare and ugly, or do we plant new beds of flowers and blooming vines seeing the beauty that is there today?

When freezing blizzards rage in our warm South, do we relinquish our love of sweltering summers, or do we continue to plant our gardens teeming with tomatoes and an over abundance of squash?

Do we let these disasters eat away at us eroding our disposition, or do we clean up the debris that tries to destroy us? Do we weave what is left behind into a braid of a better life?

This collection of recollections is a peek into the past, which may dredge up remembrances for some that they may wish to bury. But, from these memories, which once caused some folks to cower, caused other people to better use their time while they were knocked down to their knees to ask for help, to rise up, and to become better human beings and creative citizens.

Donate The 'Project Apollonia' For The Children

Project Apollonia is the Dream of Grupo Utopia Founder David Anderson and children's book author Nancy Gilliam. The purpose of the project is to provide Costa Rican school children with access to high quality English language books for grades K-6. Project Apollonia is named for Apollonia Anderson Calderon, David's youngest daughter, born December 4, 2003.

The Goal of Project Apollonia is to donate 1,000 children's books to Costa Rican schools by June of this year (2004), and 10,000 by the end of the year. To that end, A group of parties in the United States and Costa Rica have organized Project Apollonia as a non profit organization based in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Our plan is to donate the first batch of books in June of 2004 to the Costa Rican Ministry of Education. Our focus is to donate the first thousand books to the poorest schools in Costa Rica, and we have selected Limon, the poorest of Costa Rica's seven provinces to receive the first of the books.

Besides helping by donating books for the children, please copy and paste this post along with hyprelinks to your own blog or website. The trackback link is

September's Poetry Picture Challenge Winners

Congratulations goes to Lady Sunshine for her poem "A Blogosphere Zoo". Honorable Mention goes to Petro for his poem "Dangerous DNA". Both from SplashHall Poetry.

A Blogosphere Zoo

.
Here I drown in flames of your eroticism
While you're trapped behind shears of hunger
Between us lays subdued limbs
Longing, aching, to sprout exotic blooms
.
Loneliness shutters both hearts
As we box shadows in our minds
Trying to grab one embrace
As they dance in laughter
.
They claimed their residents
Skipping back and forth
Through cold haunted elders
Teasing, inciting our visions
.
Colors of rage igniting for release
Wanting to free snapdragon kisses
Being stifled by python hugs
Begging for teddy bear snuggles
.
Till this prefabricated freedom expires
We'll be enlighten in a blogosphere
Wrapped in times crystal enchanted doom
That won't let our fleshy spirits roam
.
Our minds will be living in the zoo
Where only madmen rule
