Wanting to stay in touch, this group went on to create their own community of writers through poetry boards and online virtual chat.

My vision for Splashhall grew to be very well diversified including audio (spokenword), the written word, multi-media and art.

Voodoo Chat is very instrumental in connecting the writers and participants of Splashhall Poetry Community and Poetry Cafe with live poetry reading events, in a friendly interaction and peaceful atmosphere. Recently SplashHall Chat & Poetry Cafe Chat have teamed up to bring poets from both communities together in VooDoo Chat.

Currently the hosted events are as follows:

Mondays [Poetry Cafe] 10:30 PM EDT: Host Ivvy will hold an event in The Poetry Cafe on the Intervisions server.

Thursdays [SplashHall Poetry Gate] 10:00 PM EDT: Lady_Kendred (aka Mari) & CafeRg will host in the SpashHall Poetry room on the Treasure Island Server

Fridays [SplashHall Poetry Gate] 10:00 PM EDT: SplashChat Hostess Nite will lead the Poetry Reading on the Treasure Isle Server in the SplashHall Poetry Gate.

Saturdays [SplashHall Poetry Gate] 10:00 PM EDT: Host Delia will be leading the Saturday Night's Event Treasure Island Server

Both Poetry Rooms are open 24/7 for casual reads, discussion and just good friendship.

Locate any Poetry Event Host or Room Host below including CafeRg, Mari aka Lady_Kindred, Nite, Delia aka Hell_in_a_Bucket (Sally), Beholder aka Shaolinmonky, and Sampo or just locate a friend, chances are they are reading poetry and hanging out.

For those that cant wait for a VooDoo event or casual read with friends, we also have a built text chat on the SplashHall boards.

Over the years a community of rooms (vp rooms) has grown to offer a basis for strong interaction with our member-managed community. Splash offers new rooms including romance, mystic and old popular Excite VP Rooms.

SplashHall’s strong emphasis is on contemporary poetry, and workshopping in the Poetic Ax (sharp relentless critiques), and the Poetry Wax Lounge (kinder gentler critiques) offering a wide variety of discussions and topics by professional, published poets. A good place to tweak that special poem.

Also a recently polished un-inhibited Erotica Poetry Section, that includes short stories and art. A Minimalist Poetry section for the shorter muse, which is very popular. Minimal poetry is also excellent for enhancing your creative and opening those writing blocks.

The SplashHall Poetry Staff include, in addition the above mention Chat & Events Host - Poetry Director: Witt, Splash Ambassador: Allen, Golden SplashHostess: Kay, Senior SplashHostess: Lady SunShine, SplashScribe: Soft Words

We have also developed with the direction of Jack Linden SplashArt Director, acclaimed artist from Greece, art galleries called SplashHall's Painted Poet Art Gallery. I need relief."

The captain turned his boat around,
the chief sent out a scout.
I was in the kitchen but
the cook was not about.

I motioned to the waiter;
he had no time for me.
I whistled at the waitress,
but she shook her head - "Who me?"

I searched for days and nights on end
No one would take me in.
My patience, I am sure you know,
was wearing very thin.

I crawled into the bar room
and queried at the bar.
"Can a poor girl get a freebie drink?"
The barman said, "Why sure!"

I drank there till the morning
but when I prepared to leave
the barman said "Hey lady,
just the first one was for free."

I smiled up at him shyly, said
“I have no way to pay.”
Then he grabbed me by the collar
and did not ask me, please.

What I'm trying to tell you
is that philosophers and kings
can’t beat the common barman
when a girl is on her knees

© 2006 Juliana Marie

MIND YOUR METAPHOR SPLASHHALL MEMBERS' CONTEST

Hi Splashhall Members

I am offering this members' contest to inspire, kick start
your writing skills and reward your hard work.

MIND YOUR METAPHOR

Write a poem containing the most original
metaphor you can come up with.
This can be rhyme, zen, nature, spiritual, free verse, any length
and subject. For over 70 years, the Paper Mill has provided a comparable and less expensive theatre going experience to tri-state residents, than New York’s Broadway. As a non profit organization, its reputation for helping out those who are less privileged, by enabling them to see a high quality Broadway production, is legendary.

Due to an increasing national trend, its subscribers have slowly reduced from 45,000 to fewer than 20,000. Over the last several weeks, it has been announced that the Playhouse is now in severe financial need, and faces the immediate prospect of closure.

What would be extremely useful, maybe more so than a financial contribution, (which of course will be greatly appreciated) would be a Web Site Link. I know that many of you have your own blogs and web sites. A link would of course, exponentially help to spread the word.

If any performing art lover would like to “contribute a link” then please advise me, and I can help you with the HTML if necessary.

http://www.papermill.org/papermill.html

Live Poetry Readings At The Poetry Cafe and SplashHall Poetry

Hello Poets and Friends,

We would like to inform you of the new poetry networking project of:

The Poetry Cafe A long distance runner in her youth competing in desert races in Egypt; it is somewhat ironic that she loves short line poetry. This may explain her enigmatic style of writing and being.

The natural surrealism of east European visual art is in her blood
inheritance from a Bosnian family, blending with middle eastern and European influences; alek has lived in Greece since 1976 and on the island of Samos for over twenty years.

She lived in the mountain village of Manolates working with the locals in the vineyards and olive groves. Later she worked with her horses carrying out olives, grapes and wood from the steep terraces; as there were no roads at that time only foot paths.
The photography represents her love and involvement in the land and Greece,
not from sticking a camera in front of her nose.

Warm Regards
Jack Lindus - Curator
Painted Poet Art Gallery

SplashHall's Painted Poet Art Gallery is a FREE Online Art Gallery. Warm, friendly, poetic and very very human, she loves being herself and makes me love her too for the same reason. Say hello to this extremely special and beautiful Splasher, who very sweetly agreed to be in the spotlight this week.

SW: What breezes brought you to SplashHall in the first place?
Elise: Well, believe it or not, the new chatroom in Voodoo isnt the first place "Splashers" got together. I was chatting in the old Babbleon, and surfed into the Poetry room there one day. Rg and daisy welcomed me there, and that is where I discovered the SplashBoards. There were lots of live fun poetry events and challenges, and if life ever slows down enough for me I hope to check out the VooDoo room.

SW: What brought you back here after a lengthy absence?
Elise: The obvious answer to that is...Poetry. Being here with people who share my love of poetry inspires me like nothing else, and that is why I have returned after a lengthy absence.

SW: Your favorite forum?
Elise: Genuine Splashers Poetry and Prose Forum---I just love reading the work of fellow Splashers.

SW: Your favorite Splashers?
Elise: I have MANY favorite Splashers for various reasons.

Witt is the most inspirational one to me. She kindly took me under her poetic chicken wing and taught me about meter and rhyme. I have her to thank for teaching me the basics and editing my work during a time when she was still teaching and very busy. She gives of herself unselfishly, and has influenced my work a great deal. I am happy also to consider her a dear and very talented friend.

Rg...for tirelessly creating and updating the boards for the pleasure of the Splashers. It is STILL truly the best Poetry forum around. Thank you Rg.

Sunny...whose name fits her perfectly. Always a cheerful word for everyone, and a constant friend.

daisy...so good to see her back, as she is a dear friend and a wonderful talent.

Sartor...whose words continually carry me to another place. He writes beautifully, and is also a friend.

A-Friend (Earl) whose dedication to truth and justice inspires me...He has remained a dear friend to me, even during my absence from Splash.

Word Faery, Merlin, Windspirit, Breathingwolf, Balladeer...Their talent shines, and I always look forward to reading anything new they write.

Cy Street---always gives us a sideways, yet captivating, glimpse of things and is very talented.

Lucy , Arti, Allen, Jack and Bryan...Dublinsteve...new friends who because of their warmth and eagerness to make others feel special...make Splash a better place. I am just getting to know their work and look forward to reading much more of it.

Dutch---because he is a dear friend to me, and is a unique human being who drinks in life in a very special way.

Weaver---long gone from Splash, but far from gone from my heart. We keep in touch and he is doing well. Truly a poetic genius, he has influenced my own work a great deal.

There are many others...AlluraD included...whose work I enjoy. There are many many more...and I am sure I will kick myself when their name pops into my head later.

SW: When did you start writing?
Elise: I started writing when I was 19.

SW: How much do you use the Ax? How much has the Ax helped you?
Elise: I used to use it a great deal when Witt was the only one who chopped up the poems...but now it skeers me...lol

SW: I've noticed you write form poetry. Do you prefer structured verse to free verse?
Elise: It depends on my mood. I write both kinds actually...but yes, I do love rhyme and structure. It moves me in a way that free verse doesn't .

SW: What reading would you recommend?
Elise: All of the great poets for different reasons...Emily Dickinson and Franz Wright to enjoy the power of brevity, and any form and genre that touches your mind or transports your soul.

SW: You are one of our earliest Splashers. What changes do you find, and how does it compare?
Elise: The changes I have found on returning are mostly good ones. Lots of responding to work, and a witty and playful thread running through these responses. I love how they make me smile. I would like to see a bit less criticism outside the Ax though.

SW: What do you think are the strongest influences on your writing?
Elise: Life influences my poetry the most...the highs, the lows, the environment, politics, injustice, music. Also, other poets and people I love.

SW: What are your other interests, hobbies and passions?
Elise: I am an RN...and my work is my passion. As hokey as it sounds, I truly love nurturing and easing the pain of patients and family members...as an ER Nurse I am often the central figure dealing with a patient undergoing profound trauma. I view my responsibility here very seriously and recognize the impact I have on their experience.

I have a younger brother, Wesley, who is terminally ill...as some of you know. He was infected with HIV at age 3 from a blood transfusion, and will soon be 28. He is also infected with Hepatitis C from blood. He was born with hemophilia, a bleeding disorder, which is why he received the blood. I applied to, and was appointed to President Clinton's HIV Advisory Committee to get changes made to legislature regulating the nation's blood banks to make the blood supply safer. I waved a banner on the capital steps and helped get a bill passed in Congress...I continue to write letters to Congressmen. I learned that we CAN make a difference, and this is something I am very passionate about.
A friend of mine made me a page for Wesley if you would like to see it: http://www.lisascreations.co.uk/Wesley.html

To those of you who pray, please keep Wesley in yours.

My hobbies include, but are not limited to, purse-making, quilting, music, dancing, reading, and spending time with my tiny toy apricot poodle Rusty.

SW: How much does poetry rule your life?
Elise: It doesn't. My life rules my poetry.

SW: Anything special you'd like to say to everyone here?
Elise: It's great to be back, and I am thrilled with all the new people and talent here, and to see old friends still hanging in there. I am completely re-dedicated, and re-inspired and hope to continue to interact with all of you for a very long time. Thank you to everyone for welcoming me back so warmly.

Splashing with a Sea-bourne Spirit

A Splash from the sea into these halls brought along a survivor called Rebecka Stock, a.k.a. Seabourne. A wonderful tête-à-tête with this strong, lyrical poetess is an amazing insight into the spirit of what is commonly called the human race. A long battle, a victory in verse. Join me as we celebrate Life with Seabourne, at this wonderful poetry community called SplashHall.

Soft Words:What winds blew you to SplashHall?
Seabourne: I was lucky enough to meet Deb in person, was brave enough to show her my work and it is due to her encouragement that I came and will stay. Even if I despair of ever writing the way Dublin steve does, even if I do tend to write unmetered stuff that rhymes.

Soft Words:What keeps you here?
Seabourne: The people here are just great. I get somewhat protective of my stuff, but the people who post here are so wonderful they can step on my toes anytime.

Soft Words:Your favorite forum(s)?
Seabourne: I really like the Ax. There’s nothing better then unmasked criticism. There’s nothing wrong with unmasked admiration either.

Soft Words:Your favorite Splashers?
Seabourne: Well that would be a flat even draw between Arti and Lady Sunshine.

Soft Words:When did you start writing?
Seabourne: When I retired due to Parkinson’s disease from University of Missouri. I was project leader for direct patient care applications (2000).

Soft Words:How much do you use the Ax? How much has the Ax helped you?
Seabourne: As I said the Ax is remarkable. Sometimes it feels like the people are getting too personal, which bothers me... The whole point of this country was to have the right to disagree. So why does everyone think their way is the only way?
I think only the writing should be critiqued. I have also discovered that I often need a translator. I remember when my sister found out I had taken a job for the university as a programmer. She asked,” Are there any other people who work with you?" I responded, “Yes." She said “Good I'm glad you’ll have someone who can understand what you are saying. As for me, while i recognize your words as English, that’s all the understanding I have."
I know I’m not in the same poetic wave as many of you are, but I have discovered that people like it! Well maybe not in the Ax but then I’m not posting there to feel good, I want to know how it can be Perfect! ( the big problem is there’s different versions of perfect for each person)

Soft Words:What reading would you recommend?
Seabourne: Well, let me tell you a short story about my mother, a librarian-English teacher in an inner city school. One of her students came to her and asked her for the meaning of a word. She said ok, i'll tell you but you have to look it up and tell me if i;'m right. The student agreed and looked at her with admiration when she was correct in the definition.
So the student asked another definition, and the same procedure was repeated a third time. After that the student asked her "Mrs. Snyder, have you read this whole book?" as he pointed to the dictionary.
In other words I don’t think it matters what you read as long as you do.

Soft Words:What do you think are the strongest influences on your writing?
Seabourne: Undoubtedly, my grandfather and grandmother who lived at Triangle Glen. Grandmother was a poet who had no interest in ever being published, and wrote for herself and to save her memories of life for future generations.

Soft Words:What inspires you to write?
Seabourne: It can be anything, the sound of a bird, someone’s nickname, the antic of an animal, and of course emotion (they are not all mine)

Soft Words:What are your other interests, hobbies and passions?
Seabourne: I used to teach hunt seat and beginners to ride. I asked for no money, I just wanted kids to have the horsey experience as I did when I was their age

Soft Words:You once mentioned you were writing a book of poetry. How is it coming along?
Seabourne: They are photo poems, and I have chosen to distribute them to close friends and family

Soft Words:How much does poetry rule your life?
Seabourne: It rules when I "hear” the words I have to stop and write. Since my surgery I've not "heard" anything, so Lightning Bugs and Abuse were my words, not the "heard" ones like Petals in the wind. Also I seem to have my most creative moments at night!

Soft Words:You've sent me a couple of chapters from your novel. I love the autobiographical storyline, as much as I've read of it. When do you think it will be ready for us to buy?
Seabourne: I have to admit I haven’t written but a few stories for it. I really should work more on it. I will let you know if it ever gets published.

Soft Words:Any suggestions you might have for Rg to improve on your Splashing experience?
Seabourne: I would love to see an index by poet, so I can read my favorites (can I get a favorites index too?)

Soft Words:Anything special you'd like to say to everyone here?
Seabourne: Yes there is. You have been such an encouragement to me and that is just how you are! What wonderful qualities ( Witt, Arti, Sunshine, Lucy, Sampo, Cookie, Nixon, Dublin Steve, and Mojave).hugs to ya all

Angel In The Halls - SplashScribe Interviews Gabriella Michelle a.k.a. Angel of Death. One of our youngest Splashers, she is so enthusiastic about her poetry, it’s infectious. She dabbles in paints and words while also balancing academics and school. Say hello!

SW: How did your wings bear you to SplashHall?
AD: I was just looking for a good site to post poems and it was one of the first ones I found where people actually helped you and commented on your work

SW: What keeps you flying in here?
AD: SplashHall is an amazing place. The people here are not only wonderful poets and artists but seem to honestly care about helping and encouraging creative writing

SW: Your favorite forum(s)… any special reasons?
AD: dark gothic and mystery poetry. Well I’ve just always loved the mysterious and dark poetry is what I mostly write.

SW: Your favorite Splashers so far…
AD: I love witt- she helped me out a lot when I first became a splasher and lady sunshine can brighten up my darkest poems. voodoo child has also helped me and encouraged me and I think one of my favorite poets in SplashHall is Sartor. He's an amazing writer. I absolutely love his work!

SW: When did you start writing?
AD: Well I’m still pretty young... I think the first poem i ever wrote was in the 2nd grade.

SW: Favorite authors/poets outside Splash?
AD: W.B. Yeats, Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Dickinson, Shaw, Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning, the great Shakespeare, William Wordsworth, Robert Burns, George Gordon, Lord Byron and many more... I think I'll stop there.

SW: What are the strongest influences on your writing?
AD: My friends and family, sometimes things I see happen either on TV or just in the world, but mostly its how I happen to be feeling or thinking of when I write

SW: What are your other interests, hobbies and passions?
AD: I love art. My room is covered in drawings and paintings I do. I love reading of course, going to movies ,and spending time with friends, and music is one of my greatest passions. My father's a musician. I can’t really play anything...lol But I love to listen, I love classic rock, and a lot of new bands. My favorite band is The Used.

SW: If I were a genie in a bottle, and offered you three wishes, what would you choose?
AD: hhmmm.... First I’d wish for money… lol Second good health for everyone I know, and last and most important I’d wish to just be happy for the rest of my life(to laugh every day)

SW: How much do your studies affect your writing and other art?
AD: Its hard sometimes to get homework done. Honestly I usually choose other things over doing my homework... lol

SW: What are your poetic ambitions like?
AD: Well of course I want to get better and I hope to study it in college. I don’t plan on making it a career but its something I love and plan on doing for a long time to come

SW: What prompted your choice of username?
AD: Well there’s this show called one tree hill maybe you've seen it? anyway the creator of the show Mark Shwann is an amazing writer and the show has something in it for teens and adults alike. The characters he creats are amazing one of them in particular is my favorite – Peyton – she loves music, she draws anyway... That whole angel of death thing sort of revolves around her and is used often in the show plus I find that it's very mysterious

SW: Any suggestions you might have for Rg to improve on your Splashing experience?
AD: hhmmm... I can’t really think of anything…

SW: Anything special you'd like to say to everyone here?
AD: For those of you that have helped me and complimented me THANK YOU! =)

Come on by SplashHall Poetry and visit SplashHall Poetess Angel of Dark.
<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.splashhall.org/2007/01/angel-in-halls-splashscribe-interviews.html' title='Angel In The Halls - SplashScribe Interviews Gabriella Michelle a.k.a. I can’t begin tell you how very much I have truly enjoyed finding them both!

Splash has been my haven! I have found it to be the most honest, true and kind forum ever... I am hooked!! lol I wake up to it in the morning and go to bed with it playing through the night. It seems I’ve found the best of both worlds right here in this wonderful place we call home.

Thank you Rg for all of your hard work and dedication to making this the best place ever and the Radio Rocks!! lol

Much love to all....

Denise aka LucyLuu
SplashChat Host and
Hooked on BZoO!

~*~

What I appreciate about SplashHall Poetry, is its incredibly warm feeling of community. Splash is a place where people can come, without regard to their real world identities; their age, their sex, their nationality, their religion, and even somewhat incredibly their native language.

It is a community, which by virtue of the values instilled upon it by its membership, is warm and welcoming. It is a place where writers can express themselves in poetry, and, where others will almost always reply in a considered and overtly warm way: So unlike, sometimes, the real world.

I support SplashHall financially, not so much because of the remote possibility that one day, maybe, somebody might buy a diamond from my company; but, very much more because of the feeling that I have, that this incredible community, serves a real purpose: Which, might in its most simple form, be to provide a warm and nurturing environment in which writers may expose their poetic feelings.

Allen Fogel
SplashAmbassador
Kingsgate Diamonds

~*~

When I first came across BZoO HomeGrown Radio I thought, "How wonderful is this!" A true testament to the power of the Internet.

Where everyone (with talent) could have a chance to broadcast their stuff, whether it be music, poetry, or a talk show and everything in between.

BZoO grabbed my imagination and has not ceased. What a wonderful idea and chance for all people with talent to get their stuff out there. The Independent community, it be poetry, music, spoken word, etc, has a home and a venue. That venue is BZoO HomeGrown Radio.

The truly amazing thing about it? It's free! Not just to artists, but to the listener as well. That is why I am more than proud to sponsor BZoO HomeGrown Radio to help out cover some of the costs. It's a small price to pay in my mind to be part of what I see as nothing short of a new radio revolution!.

Peace - Stephanie Larocque.
Proud BZoO HomeGrown Radio Sponsor

~*~

What can I say about SplashHall and BZoO that would give you a glimpse into these powerful worlds of creativity. It can be said so simple or the words could roll forever and a day. I’ve got to know and talked to people I would have never had a chance to meet in three life times. It’s been a real pleasure and honor for me to be a part of this growing on-line family community.

Lady SunShine
Splash Hostess
and member of over 5 years

~*~

Would you like to add your testimony here? Please help us grow in anyway you can. Donations, Sponsorship or Volunteer to assist other members or just spread the word. Have suggestions please send them to me also. Again Thank you for support and time.

Respectfully,
Rg

Meet Bernard Henrie AKA Mojave - SplashScribe Soft Words Interviews The Poet

Splashers, here is your super-special New Year treat - An interview with the reclusive Bernard Henrie a.k.a. Mojave, our Splash Poet par excellence. A tiny peek into the person behind the poet reveals that the poet is the person. Mo has a sense of humor and poetry that is a pretty rare combination, something that runs through this interview and holds it together more than my questions do. Alright, I wont hold you back anymore...

SW: What brought you to SplashHall?
Mo: I came to Splash while floating on a mill stream; that is, relaxing. reading the Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh, a favorite of Heaney:

O commemorate me where there is water,
Canal water, preferably, so Stilly
Greeny at the heart of summer. Brother
Commemorate me thus beautifully
Where by a lock niagarously roars
The falls for those who sit in the tremendous silence
Of mid-July.

It must have been a sign.

SW. What keeps you here, besides being Ax-happy?
Mo: We are all restless, irritable and filled with commitment phobia; those are our good points, of course; but I stay because of my bad characteristics: the desire for family.

SW. Your favorite Splashers?
Mo: I play no favorites --- learned that by having three god children in my life for 20 years now; no favorites, treat everybody the same, as Joseph Wambaugh says in one of his police novels. I favor the variety, the mix of different points of view; some of us like brevity, others never met a modifier we didn’t like. I like that some of my fellow writing students are from countries other than my own, younger, older; varied cultural backgrounds, urban and more rural. several people are quite short --- others quite tall --- just teasing.

SW. When did you start writing?
Mo: I started as a journalist in high school, never creative writing as we called it at that time; I was a copy boy on my local daily and worked up to reporter status --- I wanted to be a political reporter.

I edited my college paper. what I found was that I loved asking the “why” questions more than the how, where, when and who. I met a pulitzer winner who wrote feature stories, his work read like a novel; I realized how powerful that format could be, how revealing of human drama.

Journalism probably gave me my passion for the more factual, the metaphor, the poem that makes sense; literal sense, figurative sense, narrative sense; though I am not blaming my narrowness on an otherwise noble profession…

SW. I know you are absorbed in free verse poetry… have you ever experimented with other styles of poetry? Any special reasons?
Mo: not too much, but i think within "free verse" there is great variety -- Bukowski to Eliot, Berryman to an Irish writer like Patrick Kavanagh. Dylan Thomas to Sharon Olds. these writers have been able to stockpile such a treasure trove of images, metaphors that code my life:

like a patient etherized upon a table....fog on cat feet. the night coming in like little boats.

SW. Have your Ax-periences changed your way of writing?
Mo: sure. what doesn’t change us? provided we are conscious, listening, looking with our eyes and our heart, our experiences make us a new person every few months; someone in a new age workshop said, “insight comes in a flash, it’s the working out of implications that takes all the time;” I think we examine the implications here at Splash; love, marriage, divorce, isolation, struggle, the day job, identity. the implications; travel outside my country, taking financial responsibility for a child not your biological own, supporting the politician of your choice, and if you are lucky, work that you enjoy; spiritual development, but that for me means the arts – music, all that stuff.

SW. Favorite authors/poets (outside Splash)?
Mo: plenty, but I think of particular poems rather than the body of a poet’s work; early Wallace stevens, so much better than what came later; James Wright here:

In the Shreve High football stadium,
I think of Polacks nursing long beers in Tiltonsville,
And gray faces of Negroes in the blast furnace at Benwood,
And the ruptured night watchman of Wheeling Steel,
Dreaming of heroes.

All the proud fathers are ashamed to go home.
Their women cluck like starved pullets,
Dying for love.

Therefore,

Their sons grow suicidally beautiful
At the beginning of October,
And gallop terribly against each other's bodies.

--- James Wright

most of Eliot:

The winter evening settles down
With smell of steaks in passageways.
Six o’clock.
The burnt-out ends of smoky days.
And now a gusty shower wraps 5
The grimy scraps
Of withered leaves about your feet
And newspapers from vacant lots;

--- excerpt from Preludes

lots of Philip Larkin:

Light spreads darkly downwards from the high
Clusters of lights over empty chairs
That face each other, coloured differently.
Through open doors, the dining-room declares
A larger loneliness of knives and glass
And silence laid like carpet. A porter reads
An unsold evening paper. Hours pass,
And all the salesmen have gone back to Leeds,
Leaving full ashtrays in the Conference Room.
In shoeless corridors, the lights burn. How
Isolated, like a fort, it is -
The headed paper, made for writing home
(If home existed) letters of exile: Now
Night comes on. Waves fold behind villages.

--- Philip Larkin - Friday Night at the Royal Station Hotel

Pound, when he writes like this:

The apparition of these faces in the crowd;
Petals on a wet, black bough.

--- In a Station of the Metro

a lot of Sharon Olds, and Elizabeth Bishop, some Adrienne Rich

Randall Jarrel’s poems, his essays also.

From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from the dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.

--- Randall Jarrel - The Death of the Ball Turret Gunner

most of Eric Pankey:

There must be a word that means
To knock repeatedly
On a door to gain entrance
And yet not gain entrance.

Neruda, Heaney and all… all of Dylan Thomas.

SW. What do you think are the strongest influences on your writing (besides the Ax)?
Mo: my father, who never finished high school --- he could see stories, his loving acceptance of the weaknesses and eccentricities of others; Saul Pett, a feature writer with the Associated Press who won a Pulitzer; “Tell readers not only what happened," he would say, "but what it was like to have been there." ... my mom, who loved movies and took me each week – her image riding horses full gallop across the unfenced Kansas prairie, unafraid her pony would step in a gopher hole and break her neck with a terrible fall. she was a poem when she rode, free and anonymous. all the great film makers from france and italy, England and India in the 60’s and later.

SW: What are your other interests, hobbies and passions?
Mo: I’m a history buff and I like airplanes; sports, though I am now mostly a watcher --- only wish I could still play without embarrassing myself.

SW: I’ve never seen you on the forums besides the Ax… why not?
Mo: well, maybe another name? I moderated on one Forum, won an IBPC on a second, and posted on a third for more than a year.

SW: Tell me about your muse…
Mo: my daughter; and Kathleen; music and movies; art for the last few years – Vermeer to Rothko.

SW: Any suggestions you might have for Rg to improve on your Splash-ing experience?
Mo: Rg has created a wonderful world, he needs no advice from an amateur.

SW: Any words of wisdom for us?
Mo: write it down, write it down everyday and never stop writing and listening to others; if people see that you care and that you are trying to understand, they will tell you more than you ever dreamed; love your characters more than yourself; check ego at the door, finish your vegetables.

SW: Thank you for that insight, Mo. I'm sure all you Splashers enjoyed it too.

SplashScribe Soft Words - Mud-Tracking With SplashHall Poet Silty AKA Jesse Lagoon

Thank you all so much for your appreciation and encouragement on my interview with Brenda.

I’ve been following Jesse Lagoon’s silty trail for a week now. The trail leads into deeper waters, in the black lagoons that he prefers to stay in. He was pretty reluctant to come out and play Q&A with me… but in the end, we’ve made a pretty cool job of it. Dear Splashers, here is your christmas treat.

SW: What brought you to SplashHall?
silty: Dodjie found my remains in a bayou and resurrected me on the internet with mystical Asian voodoo.

SW: What keeps you here?
silty: Anonymous criticism and just enough friendship to make me care.

SW: Your favorite forum(s)?
silty: I like the Ax. I can find enough people in the real world to skim my poems and tell me “that’s cool”. It’s much more interesting when I can find people who will read through a poem completely and tell me why it sucks.

SW: Your favorite Splashers?
silty: I’m kind of a poetry whore so I have to say everyone whose poems I get the chance to read

SW: When did you start writing?
silty: While I was just a young and naive tadpole writing became one of the few things I care about in this uncertain and hypocritical world, along with reading. Writing is still one of the few things I feel control over.

SW: Do I see you on the other forums besides the Ax? If no, why not?
silty: Why go anywhere but the Ax? I hope I have the balls to get my ass handed to me by a literary assassin if it makes me a stronger, faster and better samurai poet. The Ax honors my ancestors and myself. (bows elegantly)

SW: Has your writing changed since you discovered these halls to Splash in?
silty: Yeah. I’m more careful now, you never know how bad a piece may be torn apart so I try to kick it up a notch from the start.

SW: Favorite authors/poets (outside Splash)?
silty: E.E. cummings is very cool. I recommend his “Non-Lectures” to anyone with existential angst, he manages to capture beauty through the dirty and tragic lens of our reality. Ummmm…Philip K. Dick should be canonized and his mind-fuck stories will have you down on all fours begging for more.

SW: What do you think are the strongest influences on your writing besides the black waters?
silty: Sacred mantras, sacred herbs and a stupid sense of humor.

SW: What are your other interests, hobbies and passions, besides keeping them feet silty?
silty: I love tennis actually. I like to pretend I’m playing baseball so I feel really good about myself. I’m also going to school so that’s been commanding my interest for a while now.

SW: Describe your experiences in the lagoon orchestra... Are you a lead singer?
silty: How’d you know? My throaty howl will take us to the top of the pops where I can then write jingles for car commercials which is what I’ve always really wanted to do.

SW: Tell me... your three favorite authors, three favorite movies, and three favorite sing-a-long tunes in your car.
silty: Three authors would be Philip K. Dick, John Irving and Alan Moore. Movies would be O Brother Where Art Thou, The Fifth Element and the South Park Movie. Sing-along tunes? I make up my own gibberish lyrics when I sing along actually, so it doesn’t really matter what the song is.

SW: If I were a genie in a bottle, and offered you three wishes, which ones would you want?
silty: Freedom from the chains of this physical world. I don’t think I would need the other two.

SW: What are your poetic ambitions like?
silty: I want to write poems that will make me laugh and or smile when I’m 60 years old smoking my corn-cob pipe on the back porch.

SW: Any suggestions you might have for Rg to improve on your Splashing experience?
silty: Don’t stop now!

SW: Anything special you'd like to share with us?
silty: Not really. Thanks for sharing?

SW: Lets join in Splashers and show silty some SplashHall love. Not a Splasher? No problem. I aint as pretty as Ms Shoes but hopefully you'll enjoy this interview? Then again, the gorgeous Denise Richardson aka LucyLuu will surely make up for what I lack. Please enjoy.

Rg: Lucy, What brought you to SplashHall Poetry?
Lucy: Well, lets see ummmm. If I remember correctly it was You.. lol You dragged me in kicking and screaming all the way..haha.. Just teasing.. I'd never heard of splashHall until I started listening to BZoO on poetry night. I some how stumbled upon BZoO on myspace and was hooked! So I guess you can say things just evolved from there. I'm a Myspace Poet Society Member and I guess that's how come you invited me.?? ehehe.. Maybe you just needed a good laugh and thought my poetry would do the trick..

I've also been fascinated by poets who can read their work with such feeling and passion and I love the connection with Splash/BZoO that gives us a chance to do just that on poetry night at BZoO Radio. I hope to record my own poetry soon now that I've finally learned how to use Cool Edit enough to get by ..haha Soon my poetry will be heard on the BZoO HomeGrown Radio airwaves and I hope lots of other splashers will give it a try also..

Rg: You surely have the voice for it.

Rg: Do you have a favorite forum here at SplashHall Poetry?
Lucy: That's a difficult one... I like quite a few... I guess Haiku Tag.. is #1 ..just because its so much fun and the interaction is much quicker. It's also lots of fun from VooChat especially after quite a few beers. lol I also love Erotica and Genuine Splash Poetry & Prose, Nature and Spiritual and Romancing the Heart.

I have to admit that I had never written erotica before until recently and never really gave it much thought, but some of the poems I read in Erotica inspired me.. well along with my on little muse of course... lol

Rg: Have you become friendly with any SplashHall Poets?
Lucy: Oh yeah.. lots!! I can't tell you how much Splash means to me and the friendships I've made I hope to treasure and keep forever. The personalities on here are endless... We've got some really sincere caring and kind hearted people here along with a great mix of humor. I'm blessed to be a part of these halls...You never know who'll you'll meet roaming the halls especially at night! Boo!!!! Sampo! eheeh the Zombies come out at night..

Rg: Have you found romance here at SplashHall?
Lucy: Oh Boy!! what a loaded question you got there.. lol Ummmmm.. hummmmm.. romance eh?? lol ehehe.. I guess you could call it that.. I call it a lot more. Maybe one day soon I'll let you all in on it... smiling from ear to ear.. lol

Rg: Anything you would like to shoutout to any Splashhall Poets?
Lucy: Oh you bet way too many!! Sampo and I got lost in there last night ehehe.. Thank God for IM!!! ehehe.. We finally found our way back after i had to locate the code in my email.. haha Other than that its lots of fun and I wish more would join in and share their poetry and personalities..

Rg: Those kinks should be worked out this week. And yes its really fun getting to know everyone, sharing poetry and playing around.

Rg: Does Sampo behave himself?
Lucy: Sampo is a perfect gentleman and its as though we are sitting in the same room having a drink and discussing what ever topics come up. Last night I had him Listening to BZoO Radio instead of that junk he listens to..and he actually knew some of the songs...lol Like Otis Redding.. haha but he enjoyed it..still trying to convert him..

Rg: How is VooDoo Chat different from other chats, say like Yahoo?
Lucy: There's no comparrison hon... Nothing compares to VooDoo Chat with all it's options and especially Voo/Splash Chat as I call it since you created the page for Splash it's become our own lil slice of heaven page.... I've been to many different chats including Yahoo and it just never clicked for me. I never had that feeling of home like I feel in Voo/Splash Chat and that is a big thanks to you Rg for all the hard work and talent.

What makes Voo/Splash Chat so special are our members. That's what voo is all about and what it was created for. No need to go there and be bothered by weirdos.. Heck we bring our own straight from Splash!! lol The room you created Rg has such a cozy feel to it, the campfire gives you a warm feeling and I can say I rarely feel the need to roam around in the rest of vooDoo unless I want to go look for new Avatars although some splashers have fun checking it all out.

I also like that you can use your own Avatar (your own pictures) which makes it more personal when meeting up with fellow splashers. I'm truly thankful to you Rg for giving Splash a Face and a voice with Voodoo/Splash Chat and I love that the poetry reader there is so simple to use that even I can use it!!!.. eheh

Rg: Any events planned for our new chat?
Lucy: Yeah.. we're starting to play Strip Poker tonight!! lol eheh Maybe that will draw us a bigger crowd.. ehehehe Everyone come join in.. then we'll skinny dip a while.. I’m your new SplashScribe. I don’t know if I’m as good as Shoesie or Rg, but I think I’ll get better.

I started off having fun with Brenda Nixon Cook aka Nixon, our Environmental Scientist who loves cats. We’ll be careful not to tell her husband, but Tommy, her nineteen year old cat, is the true love of her life. With her droll sense of humor, her exceptionally sensitive writes that touch a cord somewhere deep within, and her warm appreciation and suggestions, Brenda brings the freshness of her garden to these busy halls.

SW: What brought you and your daisy to SplashHall?
Nix: My Daisy blew in with the wind, I however came at the urging of my friend Balladeer, who said that it was "friendly place", where you could feel at home.

SW: What keeps you Splashing around?
Nix: Because it is a friendly place, where I can feel at home, except that I don't throw my clothes over the chair, or raid the fridge, or leave books and papers in every room. I like the companionship of the other writers, and I like to see how the creative process works for other individuals. The poetry is a huge draw for me, I like to read others work, it gives me insight into the creative process, and very rarely do I read a poem, that I do not find something that resonates with me as a reader. The feedback, I mean where else am I going to get honest feedback, my home audience is pretty limited, my husband says that's "good honey, whats for supper?", my teenager rolls her eyes and says, "well if you like it, can we go to the mall?", and my best friend loves everything I write. My 6 cats they are the real critics. If I find it shredded in the cat box, I take that as the highest of compliments.

SW: Your favorite forum(s)?
Nix: I like the Axe and the Genuine Poetry and Prose forum. I like the axe because you get honest feedback, I have an awful time with revisions, because I think every ones comments are good, and some contradict each other, and then I never sure which way is better, and I then become paralyzed, and then disgusted with myself, and I end up either never getting to a final revision, or make next to no changes at all. I think I will get better as I become more confident in my own writing and start to trust my own muse.

I like the poetry and prose, because I consider it a "sharing" or "showcase" forum, where you can read what others are working on, post poems you write that might not be from your natural voice, and just visit and read others works and share in their writing and work.

I also like the wax, as just yesterday, I tried my first "zen" poetry and you can post friendly competitions, like the one Ecphrasis, which was a result of a bet between Balladeer and myself.

SW: Any favorite Splashers (besides me… lolol)?
Nix: Well you... Like I said before "Splash" was a friendly place and everyone has made me feel right at home. Poets are like poems, I find something to like about most everyone. My friend Balladeer, is my sounding board, we both came from another forum, and I often send him my stuff, before I screw up enough courage for the axe. Honestly my friend Balladeer, Mojave, Soft Words (you know her right), Kay, Sampo, SeaSpirit, Dodjie, Sabine, Witt and Dublinsteve have commented on my poems the most, so I have connected with them more often. Mojave always includes a famous poem with his critiques, and I look forward to the poem, I learn by his example. Shropshire Lad, has been helping with the "Zen" and "Concrete" poetry, which I surprisingly like.

SW: When did you get bitten by the writing bug?
Nix: Initially as soon as I could read, maybe 2nd or 3rd grade, then in Jr. High and High School, I was on the school newspaper. In Jr. High I was the editor, isn't that funny, considering how awful my punctuation skills are. In High School, I took Journalism for three years and served as the news editor, but quit my senior year, because I could not fit in all of my science classes, with my electives. I had to choose between either my 4th year of Agriculture or my 4th year of Journalism, so the cows won. " I believe in the future of farming with a faith born not of words but of deeds".

I went to college, studied Chemistry, wrote tons of poetry on the side... like a movie "Poetry on the Side". I have poems from that period, that were written on the margins, of lab papers, calculus papers, napkins, etc.. and them sometime around 1986, I just quit. I took the road most traveled. Graduated college, got married, grew up, and for the most part, wrote very little, a few short stories, some essays, a couple starts on different novels. When my friend died this summer, I wanted to find a picture that was taken of the two of us, and I dug through the boxes in the garage, and in one of the boxes there were probably 200 or more of my poems, written from 1976 to 1985 (13 to 22). I collectively call them "Poems from the Cardboard Box", I started to type them up for my daughter, most are teenage angst stuff, some in my early 20s are not too bad, some are awful, my favorite are the political ones I wrote on the Reagan years. The process of taking all of these scribbles, notes, margins, must of woken up my sleeping muse and she has been stalking me ever since. My muse is stalker, a damn bossy, know it all, kind of stalker, maybe she is a conglomerate of all of my worst traits, except she makes all of the competing noise go away, so the tiny quiet voice inside gets a chance to create, so in that I have to thank her, but most of the time she just stalks me, at work, at home, in my sleep, until I finally put that random thought to paper.

SW: Has your writing improved/changed since your myriad Ax-periences?
Nix: Practice makes perfect, yes? I think so but not from my writing, but by example, from the reading of others work, for the exploration of others creativity. The reading of other voices, the discovery of voice, I am still finding my voice, my focus, I am not there yet. There are so many others who I believe speak with a clear resonant voice, who I long to write more like. I think as we read others work, out own voice gets stronger, and it is the collection of the work from any period of time that gives the most accurate picture of that time. We all need to speak in our own distinct voice, and it is the blending of the voices or of the instruments that make the sweetest sounds. Sorry for my soapbox....my husband tells people that I am only 5'2' without my soapbox.

SW: Favorite authors/poets (outside Splash)?
Nix: Poets - Robert Frost, E.E.Cummings, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Authors - Tom Robbins, Anne Tyler, Robin Cook , Ellen Gilchrist, Barbara Kingsolver, Jimmy Buffett, and I am a closet " Historical Romance" reader, especially those with a mystic overview like the "Highlander" Series by Karen Marie Moning ( I guess I just came out of the Closet).

SW: What do you think are the strongest influences on your writing (besides the Ax)?
Nix: My writing comes from inside, it is more an internal expression and less of an observation, so that being the case, I suspect my own life experiences have had the greatest influence on my writing. I am a doubting Thomas sort of personality, and have a strong personal faith, that I myself continually question and reaffirm. I believe all living things are connected and that in each of us resides the a
